We have long extolled the belief that scent is as integral to the beauty of a flower as its form. Being immersed in an abundance of fragrances is one of the many joys of being a florist - whether it’s the therapeutic aroma of eucalyptus, the sweetness of a garden rose or the heady beauty of jasmine. It has therefore been a natural step to collaborate with one of London's most innovative and iconic perfumers, Miller Harris, in the form of a limited edition candle collection embodying the fragrant magic of McQueens.
Sparked by a trip to McQueens HQ, Miller Harris CEO, Sarah Rotheram noted the wealth of varying fragrances as she moved from our flower-filled store through to the bustling workshop and studio. Keen to capture the evocative atmosphere, Sarah and her team pinpointed cut stems and flowers in abundance as bouquets are assembled, dry architectural fronds and sumptuous foliage, and even the soothing aquatic notes of stems in water! Together with McQueens' founder, Kally Ellis, the fragrant idea came to fruition!
Of the natural and creative collaboration, Sarah enthuses: "In business, collaborations can sometimes seem contrived, just a commercial partnership to extend reach or hop on a bandwagon. At Miller Harris our approach is completely different. We only work with people we feel an affinity with, where the partnership blooms into a unique experience."
Miller Harris and McQueens started working together when we asked them to interpret our fragrances into floral displays, photography or even just an atmosphere. Their creativity chimes with ours in a very special way. The partnership has now turned full circle with candles which interpret their world as I experience it. I’m passionate about telling stories through our scents, so this is a hugely satisfying project for me.
We all love that moment when you enter a florist’s and the smell of florals and water greets you; we wanted to capture that in a candle, but also the wonderful pocket of fragrance that welcomes you as you wander about the studio. The cutting room, the huge metallic bouquet containers in the corners; it’s not just about the florals, there are also the woody aromatic undertones of herbs and fresh green leaves. We wanted a collection that captured this difference, a surprise rather than a direct interpretation of florals."
Step behind the scenes where the magic happens, where designers with sap-stained hands craft fronds and bend boughs into bouquets. Discarded foliage exudes herby notes and aromatic lavender is strewn on benches, creating a green, powdery, tranquil and peaceful scent.
