Spend a day learning to make the flowers for a wedding — from the bouquet itself to the tables the guests sit at.

Whether you're planning to make your own wedding flowers, help a friend with theirs, or simply want to understand how bridal work comes together, this hands-on workshop covers the full picture.

Morning: the bridal bouquet

We'll open with images of bouquets in a wide range of styles, and matching boutonnieres, before talking through the materials you'll be working with. From there we move to the flowers: how to choose them for a design, how focal, filler and transitional flowers work with foliage to build texture, colour and proportion, and why the season should lead your decisions. We'll also walk through the timeline for a wedding — when to order, when to condition, when to build — which is essential if you're planning to make your own.

You'll learn to condition your materials properly and put it straight into practice, then build your own tight domed bridal bouquet alongside the tutor, followed by a matching boutonniere. You'll finish with a ribbon treatment and trailing bow, choosing your own colour combinations from the ribbons laid out, before a demonstration of professional wrapping — mini aqua pack, tissue and box bag — so you know how to transport and present a finished bouquet.

Afternoon: the wedding table

After lunch and a glass of something sparkling, we move on to reception flowers. You'll see how chicken wire designs work and how the same technique scales up to large-format arrangements, learn how to choose and prepare materials, and set up your own container properly.

The tutor will demonstrate an asymmetric garden-style design before you build your own, and together we'll set a table with vase arrangements, bud vases and candles. If time allows, we'll also introduce the kenzan — the Japanese pin holder — and make a small design to add to the scheme. We'll finish with photographs of the finished table.

You'll go home with a bouquet, a boutonniere and a genuine sense of what making your own wedding flowers involves.
